TAT Technologies LLC, located in St Marys, Pennsylvania, USA, has announced October dates for its popular Powder Metallurgy sintering course. The sintering courses are intended to offer a balanced combination of lectures and hands-on experiments, enabling students simulate actual production under different conditions, using a real sintering furnace and real green Powder Metallurgy parts.

The classes are limited in size to better facilitate interaction between student and lecturer, with best practices taught that benefit new employees, sintering supervisors, quality engineers, plant managers, and industry veterans.

Course 1: Preparation for Better Sintering

October 24 – 27, 2023

The objective of this course is to help the student “take a walk” with a green PM part, starting at the front of a conveyor furnace up to the actual sintering temperature or high heat section of the furnace.

TAT defines ‘Preparation for Better Sintering’ as “the complete delubing/debinding, reduction of all surface oxides on the iron or alloy particles, and complete diffusion of the admixed Graphite into the entire iron or alloy matrix.” Course 1 is designed to teach students how to perform high-quality preparation of the entire part, rather than just preheating.

Course 2: Sintering for Increased Throughput

October 30 – November 2, 2023

TAT states that the primary goal of Course 2 is to provide students with practical, production-oriented knowledge of the conventional ferrous PM sintering process. As in Course 1, students in Course 2 learn to traverse the temperature range from approximately 1,038ºC to the peak sintering temperature and then down to the cooling section. Attendees should learn how to determine the optimal combination of temperature, atmosphere, and time required in order to troubleshoot problems, optimise existing furnaces in a sustainable manner, and comprehend the impact of individual variables on the resulting mechanical properties.
