PyroGenesis secures first Ti64 powder order from US AM technology customer

PyroGenesis Inc., based in Montreal, Canada, has received its first commercial order from an unnamed US-based technology manufacturer serving the Additive Manufacturing industry for Ti-6Al-4V powder produced using the company’s NexGen plasma atomisation process.
The order follows testing of sample batches of PyroGenesis powder by the customer, which is reported to work closely with the aerospace industry. The value and other terms of the contract have not been disclosed. PyroGenesis stated that the powder has been produced and is expected to ship shortly.

The order covers coarse-cut Ti-6Al-4V powder with a particle size range of 45–150 µm, intended for use in Directed Energy Deposition (DED). The process is used for the production and repair of metal components, including large-scale structures for aerospace and defence applications.
“Today’s contract speaks to three of those points, namely, (i) expanding our customer base, (ii) developing repeat customers, and (iii) expanding powder suitability across three broad-based applications,” stated P. Peter Pascali, President and CEO of PyroGenesis. “The client announced today is a leader in their field who works closely with the aerospace industry.”
PyroGenesis produces titanium powders using its NexGen plasma atomisation technology, which was developed following a redesign of the company’s original plasma atomisation process. The company has progressed its commercial powder production from gram-scale customer samples to 100 kg orders, having received its first tonne-scale order in May 2023.

The company currently produces titanium powder across three particle-size categories. Its fine-cut powder, ranging from 15–63 µm, is targeted at Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB); coarse-cut powder of 45–150 µm is intended for Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-EB) and DED; while material outside these ranges is offered as feedstock for alloy production.
The latest order follows PyroGenesis outlining plans earlier this year to expand its Additive Manufacturing business, including broadening its customer base and increasing the range of applications for its metal powders.
