An Additive Manufacturing machine from MELD Manufacturing Corporation, Christiansburg, Virginia, USA, has been installed at Sydney Manufacturing Hub’s Metallurgical Facility for Solid State Additive Manufacturing, located at the University of Sydney, Australia. The facility focuses on enabling concept-to-production demonstration capabilities, including advanced pre- and post-processing of materials.

Dr Anna Paradowska and the Sydney Manufacturing Hub team will run the machine. They will focus on large-scale manufacturing and repairing civil structures using high entropy and novel alloys, as well as exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing.

Research areas will include the renovation and restoration of bridges and transportation means, applications in connection and bespoke features, and architectural applications.

The University of Sydney and Sydney Manufacturing Hub plan to complete joint work with the University of Western Sydney, Monash University, and others. Dr Paradowska has also expressed interest in creating new experiences for the University of Sydney students and bringing about a new generation of engineers experienced in emerging technologies.

MELD’s metal Additive Manufacturing machines are noted as being well-suited to infrastructure repair and improvements. The machines use MELD’s own Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) to additively manufacture metal alloys in solid state. The process is said to produce parts with properties that exceed forging requirements.

According to MELD, this installation continues the investment in its technology from Australia, which is also reportedly also being used to support initiatives in the circular economy and shipbuilding

MELD will join the University of Sydney in participating at Indo Pacific 2025 in Sydney from November 4-6.
