Farsoon Technologies, based in Changsha, China, has integrated its new Beam Shaping Technology into a number of Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing machines. Designed to improve the detail, efficiency, and versatility of metal AM, laser beam shaping is expected to open up opportunities in consumer goods, mold manufacturing, 3C electronics, aerospace, and precision casting.

This beam shaping technology enables the laser to be dynamically formed into various shapes, such as ring-shaped, point-ring-shaped, or fully customisable configurations tailored to specific application requirements. When combined with high-power lasers and optimised scanning strategies, this technology is said to significantly enhance manufacturing quality and efficiency for materials like stainless steel, aluminium alloys, and titanium alloys, reportedly achieving part densities exceeding 99.95%.

In comparison with Gaussian beams

As the melt pool width of Farsoon’s Beam Shaping Technology can be 50-100% larger than Gaussian beams, build volume rates can increase up to 2.5x faster. Melt pool spatter is also said to be reduced, even in lasers of the same power and thickness. This minimises powder contamination and porosity in built parts.

Lower temperature gradients than Gaussian beams also enable improved process stability and part consistency, lending itself to improved detail fabrication. The technology is noted as being well-suited to high-thermal conductivity materials like copper alloys.

To drive high-volume serial production, Farsoon has added its Beam Shaping Technology to its FS721M-H-8-CAMS, FS350M-4, FS273M, and FS191M metal Additive Manufacturing machines. There are plans to also integrate the technology into its large-scale machines, including the FS621M, FS811M.
