The European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) will hold this year’s EPMA Young Engineers Day online on September 4, 2020. Introduced in 2014, the EPMA Young Engineers Day aims to help foster and develop the next generation of PM careers for young engineers. The one-day online event is free to attend and aimed at students studying any subject related to Powder Metallurgy.

The programme for 2020 will include the following lectures discussing the basics of Powder Metallurgy:

09:00–09:10: Welcome, Delphine Nicolas (EPMA) and Bruno Vincenzi (EPMA)

09:10–09:55: Introduction to PM, Prof Marco Actis Grande (Politecnico di  Torino)

A what, why and when of PM. A starter guide to the wide variety of processes and applications possible within PM.

09:55–10:40: PM Materials, Luke Harris (Sandvik Osprey Ltd – Powder Group)

This presentation will discuss ideal characteristics and key differences between:

  • Powders for Press and Sinter
  • Powders for Metal Injection Moulding (MIM)
  • Powders for Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP)
  • Powders for Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM)
  • Powders for Hard Material Applications

10:40–11:00: Coffee break

11:00–11:45: PM Production Routes, Dr José Manuel Torralba (IMDEA)

Through PM, parts can be produced at a very low (competitive) price, with high dimensional accuracy, but with some loss in their properties, and conversely parts with superior properties, but less dimensional precision and a higher price can be made. That means that PM can supply materials to many different sectors, from those which produce large numbers of parts and the price is a key factor (like the automotive industry) to those where the price is a less important factor, where performance is the key issue (for example aerospace). In this lecture, Dr José Manuel Torralba will try to cover the PM process from the two points of view.

11:45–12:30: Applications for PM Products, Dr Steven Moseley (Hilti AG)

This presentation takes case studies of selected PM components and explains the benefits arising from using the PM manufacturing route as well as the added value for the customer for each component.

12:30–12:45: Final remarks and closing

The registration deadline for the EPMA Young Engineers Day 2020 is August 28. Further information and registration details and guidelines are available via the event website.
