Cat walks again thanks to additively manufactured prosthetics

An injured cat has received additively manufactured titanium prosthetics, enabling it to walk, run and climb stairs again, following an accident that resulted in the loss of both front paws. A team of medical professionals, led by Dr Wang Chao at the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering in China’s Beihang University, used Additive Manufacturing machines from Eplus3D, Hangzhou, China, to manufacture the new prosthetics for the injured cat.
The team chose AM due to the technology’s ability to realise precise, complicated shapes, both externally and internally. Using biocompatible titanium, additively manufactured prosthetic limbs can meet the requirements typically required of a bone and can help cats (and people) recover quicker.

The customised limbs worked well on the cat, who was reported to have recovered quickly from the operation. It can now walk and run normally again.
Aside from prosthetic limbs, Eplus3D has worked in other aspects of the medical sector, including additively manufacturing spinal implants, customised surgical instruments, and titanium cochlear aids.
