Avimetal, a subsidiary of Jingcheng Electromechanical, Beijing, China, has launched a new industrial Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) machine, the MT400S. Engineered specifically for high-precision batch production in the 3C electronics and automotive mould industries, it is intended to bridge large-format capability, compact factory footprint, and industrial-grade efficiency.

The machine features a build volume of 450 × 400 × 400 mm, a batch capacity of over 2,000 foldable phone hinge covers or more than 140 phone frames and a footprint of just 5.44 m². Avimetal states that the MT400S offers a substantial build volume within a remarkably small physical footprint. This build size is intended to allow manufacturers to produce large integrated parts or achieve high-density batch manufacturing of smaller components.

Sinter-based Additive Manufacturing: Beyond the hype, towards industrial success

The machine has a standard six-laser configuration, with a four-laser option available, as well as a 150–200 cm³/h build rate. It also features a variable-speed, bi-directional intelligent recoating of up to 7 m/s. The company claims that the six-laser configuration can increase productivity by more than 50% compared with four-laser, 500 W configurations.

With the intention of meeting the needs of the 3C and automotive sectors, operators can switch between 60 μm and 80 μm spot sizes. The company also states that ring/point-ring beam shaping technology effectively reduces spatter and improves surface finish.

Additionally, Avimetal states that the MT400S incorporates a suite of intelligent control systems, including its proprietary MatScanCalib for multi-laser stitching and AVIMETAL-PM for real-time monitoring of recoating and melt pool dynamics. The company states that these technologies are intended to ensure consistent density and mechanical properties across each production batch.

The MT400S supports the AVIMETAL-MPS for automated powder conveying, recycling and sieving. It features high-efficiency filtration, explosion-proof design, and continuous oxygen monitoring.
