AML3D to additively manufacture marine-grade steel impeller for thyssenkrupp and Wilhelmsen

January 13, 2021

AML3D Limited, Edinburgh, Australia, has announced the receipt of a purchase order from thyssenkrupp AG, Essen, Germany, and Wilhelmsen Ships Service AS, headquartered in Lysaker, Norway, for the delivery of a marine-grade stainless steel impeller. thyssenkrupp and Wilhelmsen formed a partnership in 2020 to offer AM solutions for the maritime industry.

AML3D explains that the stainless-steel impeller is being additively manufactured to demonstrate the advantages of the company’s WAM® technology, known as Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), a wire-based form of Directed Energy Deposition (DED), over traditional casting methods.

The purchase order to manufacture the impeller is said to be valued at SGD $33,000 (€24,500) on usual commercial purchase order terms.
