SelectAM Identify update makes core feature free, adds AI-powered 2D to 3D conversion tool
March 13, 2025

SelectAM, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, has announced the latest version of its Identify Spring ‘25 software. The update features new AI tools and an expansion of its free-to-use features.
Users can now freely use the Estimate and Redesign tools to obtain market prices or production costs for various industrial Additive Manufacturing processes, materials, and machines. These tools include calculations for how parts can be nested and how they’ll be sliced for manufacturing.
SelectAM has also added calculations for material waste (based on recycling rates) and other general costs. Once parts are uploaded, the calculations are done automatically and results are provided straight away. The redesign tool allows users to see how changing a part’s design could impact costs and determine if optimisation is worthwhile.
Users can now also set up and change their own Additive Manufacturing machines, materials, and settings within the ‘profile’ feature. This allows users to quickly adjust any settings as they estimate their parts.
By offering the platform for free, SelectAM hopes to make digital manufacturing more accessible, helping businesses considering Additive Manufacturing to make their informed choices faster.
Advanced AI for faster part identification
SelectAM has launched its Leap3D automated conversion service – based on its own AI process – to enable the simplified analysis of single or multiple 2D drawings.
After uploading the drawing(s), the AI will generate a rough 3D model from the sizes, edges, and other information available. These models can then be used to see if the parts are suitable for Additive Manufacturing, speeding up the development process and reducing manual work.
This software was developed in response to the fact that data quality and access are major problems when determining a part’s suitability for Additive Manufacturing. SelectAM found that most of its customers had 2D drawings, but manually checking their potential for AM is a slow process. Leap3D is intended to remove the data digitalisation and organisation processes when companies are considering AM, thus lowering the barrier to entry.
Like Select AM’s Identify platform, the company has made sure that this is secure and follows data export rules. The conversion happens in a secure local environment to meet strict data export requirements.

Quotations
SelectAM’s Quotations add-on has been improved with advanced calculations and by using standard packing densities to give quote prices. The packing algorithm now also allows for tighter packing by reducing the space between parts, based on their shape, so users can fit more into each build.
The post-processing settings let users fully customise by choosing from a list of specific post-processing steps to include in their AM quotes.
Data-driven part identification
SelectAM’s method is based on research, customer feedback, technical modelling, and data. The company aims to reduce human error and bias, thus helping customers improve their processes and supply chains with technical and business insights.
The company states that its customers usually see a 90% reduction in the time it takes to find suitable uses and a big increase in confidence in using Additive Manufacturing.
