NIST researcher receives 2024 Presidential Rank Award for optical sensors
December 10, 2024
A senior research scientist at the US Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been awarded Distinguished Rank in the Presidential Rank Awards. Dr John Lehman was honoured for his work on sensors for optical power measurements that have important applications in Additive Manufacturing, amongst other fields.
Through his work, Lehman led the development of novel optical sensors, including carbon-nanotube-based radiometers for remote sensing and photon momentum sensors that offer a new physical paradigm for high-power laser measurements. He also contributed to workforce development in the emerging quantum industry.
In total, three NIST senior research scientists were awarded the Distinguished Rank this year. In addition to Lehman, Nada Golmie, John Kitching were recognised as senior career employees with a sustained, extraordinary record of professional, technical or scientific achievement in the public service.
“I am so proud to have served with these three outstanding individuals and with all the dedicated public servants at NIST who helped make their achievements possible,” stated Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Laurie E Locascio. “These scientists are working on critical emerging technologies that are key to our economic and national security. This is a great example of how publicly funded science helps the US stay ahead in the global competition for technology leadership.”
