Continuum and AM Research examine closed-loop materials for scaling metal AM

Continuum Powders, Houston, Texas, USA, and Additive Manufacturing Research (AM Research), New York, New York, have published a new white paper, examining how material availability is emerging as one of the defining challenges facing metal Additive Manufacturing as the industry transitions from prototyping to production.
Titled Metal AM at Scale: The Closed-Loop Materials Era, the white paper argues that, while machine performance, part quality and qualification remain critical, manufacturers must increasingly consider long-term material availability, supply chain resilience and resource efficiency as production volumes continue to grow.

According to the report, AM Research forecasts that the value of parts produced via PBF Additive Manufacturing will increase from approximately $6 billion in 2025 to almost $30 billion by 2034. Such growth is expected to increase demand for strategic materials, including nickel, titanium, copper and speciality alloys, across aerospace, defence, energy, medical and AI infrastructure.
The white paper explores how closed-loop material ecosystems could help manufacturers address these challenges. Rather than viewing recycled feedstock solely as a sustainability initiative, the report suggests it can also improve supply resilience, reduce waste, help control material costs and support production at scale.

Among the topics covered are the growing importance of material availability as a competitive differentiator, evolving demand across key industries, the business case for circular material strategies, and examples of organisations that have adopted closed-loop approaches.
