Phase3D, based in Chicago, Illinois, USA, has partnered with Excel3D Advanced Technologies, Mumbai, India, to expand access to real-time in-situ inspection for metal Additive Manufacturing across India. The partnership brings Phase3D’s Fringe Inspection technology to manufacturers, researchers and engineering organisations looking to improve quality assurance, accelerate qualification and reduce reliance on post-build inspection for Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB).
By combining Phase3D’s metrology-grade inspection technology with Excel3D’s experience in advanced manufacturing and engineering education, the partnership is intended to help organisations adopt more data-driven manufacturing workflows while supporting the growth of metal AM across the region.

Traditional inspection methods often identify defects only after a build has finished, relying on CT scanning, destructive testing or manual inspection to assess part quality. While these methods remain valuable, they can be expensive, time-consuming and only provide insight once manufacturing is complete.
Phase3D states that its Fringe Inspection technology changes this approach by capturing high-resolution, three-dimensional measurements of every powder layer during the PBF-LB process. Rather than waiting until a build has finished, manufacturers gain objective measurement data throughout production, allowing manufacturers to monitor build quality as it develops.

Together, the two companies will make Fringe Inspection more accessible to manufacturers throughout India, providing both the technology and local expertise needed to support successful implementation.
The companies state that as industries including aerospace, defence, space, energy, medical devices and research increasingly adopt metal AM, the ability to qualify parts efficiently is becoming a critical challenge. By providing objective, layer-by-layer measurement data throughout the PBF-LB process, Fringe Inspection is intended to enable manufacturers to build a deeper understanding of how process conditions influence final part quality.
The resulting data can support process development, machine qualification, production monitoring and continuous improvement, helping manufacturers reduce inspection costs while increasing confidence in production-ready components.
This approach supports the industry’s broader move towards data-driven manufacturing and Phase3D’s vision of enabling “born qualified” AM, where quality evidence is generated throughout the build rather than only after production has finished.
The partnership will be introduced during Phase3D’s upcoming webinar, where attendees will also see a live demonstration of Fringe Inspection. The session will explore independent research conducted by AMIST at the University of Louisville examining the relationship between in-process spatter measurements and final part porosity, highlighting how real-time measurement data can provide valuable insight into build quality before components leave the machine.
