GlobalAM to host second workshop at MSE 2026

The EU-funded GlobalAM project has announced its second workshop, which will take place during the Materials Science and Engineering Congress (MSE 2026), held in Darmstadt, Germany, and online from September 29–October 1, 2026.

The workshop will focus on GlobalAM’s work to develop Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing for the high-precision, higher-volume production of multi-material components on dissimilar substrate materials.

GlobalAM is investigating a hybrid manufacturing approach in which relatively small, complex functional features are produced by metal Additive Manufacturing on pre-manufactured substrates, rather than manufacturing the entire component additively. The project states that this could reduce the required build volume and associated pre- and post-processing, while allowing substrate and component materials to be selected based on their functional requirements.

A key objective is to achieve reliable joining between the additively manufactured features and their substrates while maintaining high precision and limiting defects. GlobalAM is also investigating residual stress control, laser beam splitting and shaping, and process monitoring and control as part of the proposed production approach.

The project is developing a machine concept that combines rapid substrate positioning and fixation with beam-splitting and beam-shaping technologies, along with advanced process monitoring and control. According to GlobalAM, the aim is to increase productivity while retaining the flexibility and precision offered by PBF-LB.

The project brings together academic and industrial partners working in production technology, laser systems, process development, monitoring and control, modelling and simulation, and metal powder production.

GlobalAM states that the resulting technologies could support wider use of metal Additive Manufacturing for higher-volume production by combining conventionally manufactured substrates with complex additively manufactured features.
