AM-SMART conference on smart materials announced

The first Additive Manufacturing for Smart Materials (AM-SMART) Conference has been announced for September 14–16, 2026, at the University of Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands. The event is intended to bring together researchers, engineers, and industry professionals from around the world working in Additive Manufacturing and smart materials, addressing an emerging area in advanced manufacturing: the integration of intelligent, responsive materials with AM technologies.

The convergence of AM and smart materials may enable a new generation of components capable of sensing, adapting, and responding to their environment. For industry, this opens opportunities in areas such as lightweight aerospace structures, patient-specific medical devices, and intelligent energy systems. However, challenges related to process control, material reliability, and standardisation remain significant barriers to wider adoption, making focused collaboration across academia and industry increasingly important.

The conference programme will cover a broad range of topics, including smart material development, design for AM, sustainability, process optimisation, AI-driven modelling and simulation, and emerging AM methods such as 4D printing, multi-material systems, and hybrid manufacturing. Applications in the healthcare, aerospace, and automotive sectors will also be addressed.
Confirmed keynote speakers include:
- Prof Paulo Jorge Da Silva Bartolo, NTU Singapore
- Prof Dr.-Ing. Thomas Niendorf, University of Kassel
- Prof Dermot Brabazon, Dublin City University
- Prof Mohammad Elahinia, University of Toledo
- Dr Amir Zadpoor, TU Delft
Abstract submissions are now open for oral presentations, with a deadline of May 1, 2026. Researchers and industry professionals are invited to contribute work addressing both fundamental research and industrial applications.
Those interested can submit their abstracts here.
