Progold partners with Chaumet for 7th Worldwide Metal 3D Printed Jewel Design Contest
August 15, 2023
The 7th Worldwide Metal 3D Printed Jewel Design Contest, held in collaboration with Progold SpA, Chaumet and Platinum Guild International, has highlighted the potential of using platinum in Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing to create high-quality jewellery designs with improved metal performance.
Supported by French jewellery house Chaumet, design students from six schools across Italy, Spain and China were given the chance to reinterpret a piece from the Chaumet’s Josephine Collection using platinum PBF-LB Additive Manufacturing. This marks a change from the themes of previous years, which tended to be more technical (e.g., geometries best suited to AM, hollow pieces, etc.).
“The winning entry would be the one that really finds a balancing act between very distinctive, very Chaumet design, easily identifiable to the Josephine Collection, yet with something new,” stated Raphael Mingam, Global CMCO, Chaumet.
As to why the luxury brand took part in the competition, Mingam explained, “Sharing is very important to Chaumet. This is one of our core values, and working on this contest is an opportunity to have these kinds of exchanges. And at Chaumet we do care a lot about Corporate Social Responsibility and this contest on platinum could be a way to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion enables jewellery designers to create intricate and innovative designs that were previously impossible to achieve using traditional methods. This method also increases efficiency and precision, resulting in higher quality and better metal performance.
The students were assisted in their journey by contest runner Progold, who specialises in platinum Powder Metallurgy and has developed the use of Additive Manufacturing in the jewellery space over a decade.
