As part of a collaboration intended to accelerate Additive Manufacturing production within the aviation and energy industries, Chromalloy, a global supplier of critical turbine components based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA, has chosen SLM Solutions, Lübeck, Germany, as its metal AM partner and acquired the SLM® 280 Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing, its first from SLM.

Building on previous experience in metal Additive Manufacturing, Chromalloy will utilise SLM Solutions’ technology to develop high-quality metal parts, focusing on its proprietary LifeX® products and services.

“We are looking forward to positively impacting our product development time with SLM’s proven uptime and dedicated service group,” explained John Green, CTO of Chromalloy. “We’re relying on the high availability to allow us to focus on our proprietary LifeX products and services that lower the cost and duration of an engine overhaul while maintaining the high safety and quality standards our customers and the industry demand.”

Chromalloy provides the aviation and energy industries with a range of aftermarket solutions and is a leading independent supplier of proprietary parts and advanced components for jet engines and gas turbines. The combination of Chromalloy’s experience with SLM Solutions’ technology is anticipated to push technological boundaries.

Jim Whitton, Director, Technology Strategy at Chromalloy, added, “We’re excited to kick off the next chapter in Chromalloy’s additive applications with SLM Solutions, backed by their industrial machine design and the innovative goals of their customers in mind.”

SLM Solutions has attributed its success, in part, to the open-architecture strategy of its machines.

Rich Cline, Regional Sales Manager, Southern US of SLM Solutions, stated, “For us, the customer always comes first. This means that our industry-leading solutions are completely adaptable if desired. It puts the user in control to maximise the value of their SLM machine to develop, enhance, and ultimately produce their metal AM applications as they wish. Our technology allows our customers to create competitive advantages and even develop IP around their own materials, applications, or process parameters.”

“Chromalloy’s decision to move to an SLM machine speaks to SLM Solutions’ success and underscores its technological leadership. Together we will accelerate the use of metal-based Additive Manufacturing,” he concluded.

Fabrizio Ragusa, Global Business Development Director Energy of SLM Solutions, added, “That Additive Manufacturing is being used for turbine applications is the reality. Many critical components are built with [PBF-LB] and operate in very challenging conditions. We are proud to collaborate with Chromalloy, a leading expert of engines in power generation, O&G, and aviation sectors. Together, we can set a benchmark and continue to push the boundaries of technology.”
