Aconity3D introduces multi-material welding head for DED

Aconity3D GmbH, based in Herzogenrath, Germany, has introduced a new multi-material welding head for its AconityWIRE laser-based Direct Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing technology. The new head is designed to enable the processing of multiple wire materials within a single build.
Multi-material applications may present challenges in process stability, system integration and flexibility. According to Aconity3D, its new welding head is designed to address these issues by enabling a more streamlined and adaptable approach.
The head allows up to three different wire materials to be processed in one build without requiring machine changes. The company noted that the technology is designed to support increased design flexibility, reduced process complexity and shorter development times from concept to application.
In addition to new-build applications, the new welding head is well suited to repair and refurbishment, with worn or damaged areas receiving deposits of function-specific materials, enabling targeted reinforcement and localised material modification.

The head is already in use at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, Germany, where it is being applied in research and process development activities. Here, material combinations are being evaluated and processes validated for application-focused use cases.

AconityXPERIENCE open day
The new multi-material welding head will be demonstrated at AconityXPERIENCE, the company’s first in-house promotional event, scheduled to take place on May 19, 2026. The open day will include live process demonstrations, presentations of the company’s latest Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing machine, the AconityX, and opportunities to engage with Aconity3D engineers.
The multi-material welding head is available as an add-on for the AconityWIRE Additive Manufacturing machine or as a standalone module for integration into existing manufacturing environments.
