Freemelt, Mölndal, Sweden, has received an order for a Freemelt ONE Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-EB) Additive Manufacturing machine from the University of Maribor, where it will be used for the research of materials for orthopaedic deliveries. This marks the first delivery of the machine to Slovenia and is expected to be delivered in the third quarter of 2022.

The Freemelt ONE and PixelMelt software are both said to be optimised for materials research with the aim of faster introduction of new materials and products in industrial applications.

“We want to experiment with in-situ alloys and functionally graded microstructures of metal alloys,” stated Igor Drstvensek, Professor of Additive Manufacturing, University of Maribor. “Our work with E-PBF will be focused mainly on medical applications of biocompatible and biodegradable metals, such as tantalum, titanium and magnesium alloys.”

Ulric Ljungblad, CEO, of Freemelt, added, “The order demonstrates the strength of our strategy with materials research equipment that enables and develops future industrial applications. The fact that the system will be used for materials research in orthopaedic applications is also fully in line with our strategy around the commercial areas that we focus on with the upcoming production system.”
