The University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, will host the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Network’s 1st Conference for Holistic Innovation in Additive Manufacturing (HI-AM) on May 22–23, 2018. The conference represents the first in a planned series of annual meetings of the HI-AM Network, allowing participants to present their research findings to the other research teams within the network, as well as to representatives of industrial partners.

The NSERC/CFI HI-AM Network was conceived to work on innovative solutions to address the challenges associated with metal AM processes/products and to equip Canada for Industry 4.0. Hosted by a different institution each year, the conference is expected to provide an opportunity for graduate students and other members of the community to network and to demonstrate the value, relevance and importance of the research ongoing in the HI-AM Network.

The conference will include keynote speeches delivered by AM experts from academia and industry, oral presentations and poster sessions. Working sessions are designed to increase the cross-disciplinary cooperation and one-on-one interaction. Sessions at the 2018 conference will include:

  • Material Development Tailored with Optimum Process Parameters
  • Advanced Process Modeling and Coupled Component/Process Design
  • In-line Monitoring/Metrology and Intelligent Process Control Strategies
  • Innovative AM processes and AM-made Products

This year’s keynote speakers are Mohsen Seifi, Director of Global Additive Manufacturing Programs at ASTM International, USA, Ian Gibson, Professor of Additive Manufacturing at Deakin University, Australia, Mohammad Ehteshami, Vice President and General Manager, GE Additive, USA and Timothy Simpson, Paul Morrow Professor of Engineering Design & Manufacturing, Pennsylvania State University, USA.

Also included will be a number of themed meetings, organised during the conference to coordinate yearly research activities, use of equipment and address any issues that have arisen in the previous year. Appropriate industry and government researchers, university-industry liaison officer, and design engineers will be asked to participate in these meetings to provide input on the results of the research program and advise on new research directions.
