Instruct3D, based in Sheffield, UK, has launched Additive Build Intelligence, a platform intended to help metal Additive Manufacturing users predict build issues, analyse process data and generate evidence to support build verification.

The platform combines physics-based optimisation, sensor hardware and data analysis. According to Instruct3D, the technology builds on more than twenty years of Additive Manufacturing research at the University of Sheffield.

Rather than positioning the technology solely as an in-situ monitoring system, Instruct3D uses camera-based data captured by its VertX hardware as an input to AdditiveOS, the company’s software platform. AdditiveOS analyses this process data alongside physics-based predictions to provide information intended to support decision making before, during and after a build.

Sinter-based Additive Manufacturing: Beyond the hype, towards industrial success

The company states that the platform can be used to identify where build issues may occur, analyse events during a build, generate data for build verification and use information from previous builds to inform subsequent production.

“Metal AM does not need more disconnected data,” stated Ben Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Instruct3D. “It needs intelligence that helps manufacturers make better decisions before, during, and after the build. Additive Build Intelligence is about giving teams the confidence to build high-value parts more predictably, reduce trial-and-error, and move faster from development into production.”

According to Instruct3D, the technology has been deployed on multiple machines internationally, with use extending from academic environments to contract manufacturing and prime-led applications.

Rob Snell, co-founder of Instruct3D, added, “Cameras are part of the system, but they are not the story. The story is what we do with the data. By linking measured build behaviour with physics-based prediction and learning workflows, we can help users understand the material reality of the build, not just observe the process.”

According to Instruct3D, users in sectors including aerospace, defence, energy and advanced manufacturing are seeking to reduce failed builds, shorten parameter development, improve process understanding and generate evidence for quality verification.

Instruct3D plans to present its Additive Build Intelligence concept at ICAM 2026, taking place September 28–October 2, 2026, in Orlando, Florida, USA. Thomas will present ‘Cost-Effective, Multi-Modal Sensors for Cross-Platform AM Part Verification’ from 10.30–10.50 am in the In-Situ Monitoring and Process Control track in Regency Ballroom P.
