Höganäs using satellite imagery to monitor environmental impact

Sweden’s Höganäs AB has shared that, since April 2023, it has been undertaking a pilot project to investigate whether satellite monitoring can contribute to a greater understanding of how the company’s operations affect the environment. If successful in this endeavour, the company’s next step would be to spread the initiative to its other sites and monitor suppliers.
As part of the this project, Höganäs has been working with Environmental Engineer Frida Lindblah to assess the water quality in the sea outside of the plant. Using satellite images, the team also studied the local vegetation and measured whether dust was spreading.
Anders Bergman, Environment and Climate Manager, Group Sustainability, explained, “Today we measure our emissions, but it is also interesting to know if we impact our surroundings, so that we can adapt our environmental protection measures.”
Lindblah added, “Using satellite images, we can see how the vegetation is doing and how varied it is. If the vegetation is healthy and varied, it attracts a higher number of insects and other animals. By using historical satellite images, we can see how vegetation has developed over time.”
The pilot project will run until June, when it will then be evaluated.
