APWorks, Taufkirchen, Germany, has revealed that the latest Bugatti Chiron, the Chiron Pur Sport, is fitted with an additively manufactured titanium exhaust tailpipe. Built by APWorks, the extremely lightweight and temperature-resistant tailpipe saves around 50 kg compared to a standard tailpipe, and offers an improved aerodynamic design.

The new exhaust tailpipe is a key part of the rear design of the Chiron Pur Sport, contributing to the improved aerodynamic configuration, which generates more downforce, and the lower weight which increases agility. “By cutting the weight by 50 kg, while simultaneously boosting the downforce and configuring an uncompromising, sporty chassis as well as suspension setup, the Chiron Pur Sport boasts incredible grip, sensational acceleration and extraordinarily accurate handling. It’s the most uncompromising yet agile Bugatti of recent times,” stated Stephan Winkelmann, President of Bugatti.

“We focused particularly on the agility of the Chiron Pur Sport,” added Frank Heyl, Head of Exterior Design and Deputy Head Designer at Bugatti. “The vehicle generates more downforce at the rear axle while the large, front splitter, air inlets, wheel-arch vents featuring optimised air outlets and a reduced vehicle height strike a clean balance at the front.”

APWorks added that titanium combines high strength and good heat resistance, and the new tailpipe is a prime example of an optimised, high-performance part enabled by Additive Manufacturing. “We are proud to be part of this impressive new sports car development of Bugatti. It is the first visible metal 3D printed part receiving the road homologation. We could only realise this innovative tailpipe by pushing the Additive Manufacturing technology to the limit. Smallest wall thickness of below 0.5 mm enable the extremely lightweight design,” stated Joachim Zettler, Managing Director of APWorks.
