Additive Manufacturing Research (AM Research), a provider of industry analysis, forecasting and data for the AM sector, has published a new edition of its market study titled Additive Manufacturing in Military and Defense 2024, written by Tali Rosman. While the original (2023) edition saw $300 million in direct DoD spending in 2023, AM Research reports an $800 million market in 2024, marking growth of 166% year over year.

The author expects this growth to maintain through the end of the decade, to a market for military/defence AM exceeding $2.6 billion in 2030.

Based on new analysis, the report forecasts that opportunities in military and defence are larger and growing faster than reported in the 2023 edition. The latest report also offers insights into the role of AM in this sector, highlighting the rapid evolution and current and potential impact of AM on the military and defence landscape.

AM Research believes its findings could hold significant implications for defence contractors, technology providers, investors and policymakers, indicating the need for proactive measures to harness the full potential of AM in addressing the national security landscape. As global tensions and security concerns have only grown since the original 2023 publication, AM is better positioned to have a crucial role in the defence sector for the conceptualisation, development, and deployment critical assets and equipment.

Additive Manufacturing in Military and Defense 2024 examines the current initiatives of the United States military and defence sector to adopt and utilise Additive Manufacturing in its operations. This includes an analysis based on expert insights and firsthand interviews conducted with personnel from the US Navy, US Air Force, Space Force, and US Army. Additionally, the report offers recommendations for Additive Manufacturing vendors aiming to enter the military and defence market.

The report also considers the United States Department of Defense budget and features and Excel-based market sizing and forecasting for all leading types of Additive Manufacturing, including Powder Bed Fusion, Directed Energy Deposition, Metal Binder Jetting and Bound Metal Deposition. The report considers revenues derived from hardware, materials and Additive Manufacturing services for both the polymer and metal AM markets.

This AM Research report is authored by Tali Rosman, an experienced Additive Manufacturing industry executive previously in senior roles at Stratasys and XEROX. Amongst many career highlights, Rosman oversaw the first ever Additive Manufacturing machine installed on a US Navy ship.
