BeAM, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, and Siemens plc, have announced plans to further strengthen their collaboration on Directed Energy Deposition (DED) Additive Manufacturing. The announcement follows the successful piloting of Sinumerik One, a new generation of CNC machine produced by Siemens.

BeAM is said to be the first machine builder to have equipped an Additive Manufacturing machine – its BeAM Modulo 250 – with a Sinumerik One CNC controller, which features software for the creation of digital twins. The Sinumerik One-equipped Modulo 250 was recently exhibited by the company at EMO 2019.

“We are very excited to close the loop in the additive digital chain by bridging virtual simulation and actual deposition on our new Modulo 250 thanks to the integration of the new Sinumerik One,” stated Vincent Gillet, BeAM CEO. “It opens up new possibilities for our industrial customers willing to integrate further DED in their value chain and optimise its usage.”

In future, the companies plan to further their collaboration by equipping the entire BeAM machine fleet successively with Sinumerik One. In addition, the companies stated that they plan to implement BeAM machines in the integrated Additive Manufacturing solutions of Siemens’ Digital Enterprise portfolio.

This is expected to enable joint developments and adaptations to CAD/CAM functions in Siemens NX to be tackled by both companies, with closer cooperation also planned in terms of data management through Teamcenter, implementation in MES/MOM systems, process control and support for process monitoring and service functions from Siemens MindSphere and Edge functionality.

“The rapid industrialisation of Additive Manufacturing goes hand in hand with digital transformation and can only be achieved through close cooperation between experts in software and hardware and in industrial 3D printing, as is the case with Siemens and BeAM,” stated Uwe Ruttkamp, Head of Machine Tool Systems at Siemens Digital Industries.

“Through the use of digital twins throughout the value chain from virtual design to creation of the actual component, digitalisation in Additive Manufacturing ensures maximum efficiency, productivity and data transparency for the entire production process as well as maximum quality for the manufactured component,” he concluded.
