Fraunhofer ILT celebrates 40 years of laser technology

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT (Fraunhofer ILT), located in Aachen, Germany, recently celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a short film, centring on the technological developments the institute has seen since 1985.
Beginning with five employees, Fraunhofer ILT has expanded over the last four decades to employ over 530 people. The institute has also seen former engineers and researchers form more than forty spin-off companies, highlighting the organisation’s place as a development centre.
Fraunhofer ILT is part of Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, one of Germany’s leading research institutions, comprising seventy-five institutes, approximately 32,000 employees, and an annual research value of €3.6 billion.
Fraunhofer ILT offers research and development, system design and quality assurance, consultation and education. A wide range of industrial laser machines and infrastructure is available to support research and development. In addition to established laser manufacturers, the organisation notes that start-ups from the fields of special plant engineering, laser manufacturing technology and laser measurement technology may find the location well-suited for the industrial implementation of their ideas.
The company added laser-based Additive Manufacturing technologies to its portfolio in 2005.
