Nikon Advanced Manufacturing (Nikon AM), headquartered in Belmont, California, has been awarded a contract by the US Department of War (DOW) to supply multiple metal Additive Manufacturing machines as part of its Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment programme. Under the agreement, Nikon AM will provide customised AM machines targeted for the production of Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM) mid-bodies, and other similar applications.

The contract, awarded under the Cornerstone Other Transaction Authority (COTA), includes the delivery of multiple Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) AM machines with a 2 m build height, based on the large-format NXG-E platform. The programme will be executed at the Nikon AM Technology Center in Long Beach, California, where the machines will be utilised to manufacture prototypes and scale critical production capacity.

Sinter-based Additive Manufacturing: Beyond the hype, towards industrial success

The facility in Long Beach offers in-house engineering, production, laboratory and qualification assets and expertise, all operating together under stringent manufacturing requirements to support the aerospace and defence industries.

Commenting on this announcement, Hamid Zarringhalam, GM and CEO of Nikon Advanced Manufacturing, said, “Nikon AM is deeply committed to delivering the vital manufacturing capabilities required to grow and strengthen the defense industrial base for the United States and our allies. We are proud to leverage our company’s esteemed history of innovation and ability to scale to provide advanced manufacturing technology to expand production capacity of TLAM and other critical systems with speed.”
