SnowX develops compact SnowPod metal AM machine with enclosed powder handling

SnowX, based in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China, is developing a compact metal Additive Manufacturing machine, the SnowPod, which combines a small build volume with enclosed powder handling, material recovery, process monitoring and an integrated nitrogen supply.
The company plans to launch the system through Kickstarter in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The SnowPod uses laser beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) and is initially intended for processing 316L stainless steel. Measuring 360 × 360 × 660 mm, the machine has a build volume of 80 × 80 × 100 mm. The machine is reported to combine a 40 μm laser spot with adjustable layer thicknesses of 30–60 μm and Z-axis motion precision of 3 μm.

Powder handling is based on sealed cartridges and an enclosed build environment. The machine incorporates filtration and unused-powder recovery, with SnowX reporting a recovery efficiency of around 90%, depending on part geometry. Quick-change powder cartridges are intended to simplify material handling between builds.
The system also monitors PM2.5, gas concentrations, temperature and humidity. Chamber-door, filtration and machine-status interlocks are designed to prevent the build chamber from being opened until preset safety conditions have been met.

SnowX has developed a companion nitrogen generator, NitroPod, for the AM machine. The unit is reported to separate nitrogen from ambient air and supply it to the SnowPod.
For support removal, SnowX has developed a breakaway support structure that it says can be progressively detached from the component. The company describes the structure as functioning in a similar way to a zipper and intends it to simplify support removal.
The SnowPod is supplied with SnowPath, the company’s in-house slicing and toolpath software. The software prepares the build, transfers the job to the machine and can initiate the build process.

An integrated camera is used for build monitoring. According to SnowX, its software uses AI-based visual algorithms from the first layer to identify conditions including lifting edges and insufficient powder delivery and flag potential anomalies.
SnowX is positioning the SnowPod for applications including mechanical and robotics components, jewellery, metal models, artwork and product prototypes. The company is also developing a user community aimed in part at artists and designers.
