SMS Group founds SMS Innovation Hub for future technologies

SMS Group, headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, has established a new Innovation Hub in an effort to accelerate future technologies and develop them to market maturity. The company announced that Hans Ferkel will lead the SMS Innovation Hub as CEO, with Thomas Hansmann replacing Ferkel as the SMS Group’s new CTO.

Hans Ferkel, has been the SMS Groups CTO and a member of the managing board since 2019. His successor as CTO on the managing board, Thomas Hansmann, was most recently Executive Vice President Metallurgy at SMS Group, having joined SMS subsidiary Paul Wurth in 1995.

‟With the establishment of the Innovation Hub we will give selected technologies the focused attention and acceleration that we need to be successful in the market,” stated Edwin Eichler, chairman of the supervisory board at SMS. ‟Hans Ferkel is the ideal person to use his broad know-how for this. Thomas Hansmann will bring his longstanding technological and metallurgical experience to the managing board.”

In addition to a range of services, SMS group supplies plant technology for the production of high-quality, high-purity metal powders for Additive Manufacturing and other technologies related to Powder Metallurgy. The company offers its Vacuum Induction Melting Gas Atomisation (VIGA) systems and continuous powder atomisation plants for production of a wide range of metal powders.
