SCI Engineered Materials has expanded its capabilities to include the production of spherical metal powders for Additive Manufacturing

SCI Engineered Materials Inc, Columbus, Ohio, USA, announced that it has installed a Plasma Spheroidisation System (PSS), expanding its materials processing capabilities. The company states that the equipment can process high-value raw materials, including platinum-group precious metals.

The PSS uses plasma processing to convert irregular metal powder into high-sphericity, high-purity powder suitable for use as Additive Manufacturing feedstock, with SCI stating that spherical powders can improve manufacturing and performance properties. SCI offers advanced characterisation and testing used to validate feedstock qualifications and other customer quality requirements before higher-volume production, which the company stated can result in fewer defects.

SCI has also developed debinding capabilities for use prior to sintering. The company reported that its debinding process can reduce costs and support product integrity by improving flow, density, tensile strength and material fatigue performance. Faster debinding may also improve throughput and reduce cycle times in the manufacture of customer products.

“The PSS equipment complements our current manufacturing footprint and highlights the company’s strategic focus on advanced materials through Additive Manufacturing,” stated Jeremy Young, President and Chief Executive Officer.

“We are now able to produce spherical powders and debind custom parts for customers. This comprehensive solution is especially important for companies engaged in the aeronautical, defence and biomedical markets. We will be launching targeted marketing initiatives in the third quarter of 2026 to support this extension of our business, initially through online campaigns and direct customer contact.”
