New ISO/ASTM standard for qualification of industrial Additive Manufacturing processes and production
July 26, 2023
A new quality assurance standard, ‘ISO/ASTM 52920:2023 – Additive Manufacturing — Qualification principles — Requirements for industrial Additive Manufacturing processes and production sites’, has been released and is now available from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The standard is intended for Additive Manufacturing part makers, and is independent of the material used and the specific manufacturing method.
The document specifies criteria for AM relevant processes as well as quality-relevant characteristics and factors within additive system operations. It also defines activities and sequences within the AM production site.
ISO/ASTM 52900 outlines the requirements that are necessary for designing processes for high-quality parts made by AM, with a particular focus on regulated industries such as automotive, mechanical engineering, the rail sector, aerospace, process and industrial systems, and medical.
Important measures that are to be controlled and monitored in order to ensure consistent quality for AM parts are also defined.
ISO/ASTM 52900 provides requirements that go beyond those provided by a quality management system, such as ISO 9001, ISO/TS 22163, ISO 19443, EN 9100, ISO 13485, and IATF 16949. Furthermore, this document can be used to establish quality management system content that is relevant and specific to AM technology.
