Stefany joined the Department of the Navy as an Engineer-in-Training in 1985 and prior to managing the MIB, had spent almost three years in the role of acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition. In this role, Stefany was responsible for all DON Research and Development, Acquisition and Sustainment programmes, managing a budget of more than $130 billion a year and oversight of more than 55,000 acquisition professionals. During this time, Stefany testified before the US Congress and chaired monthly meetings with the CEOs of the top 10 US Defense companies.
Stefany also held the role of Principal Civilian Deputy ASN RDA, between October 2019 and August 2024, and oversaw the development and implementation of the plan to start the US Navy’s Columbia submarine programme. In the prior year, while in the role of Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Ships, he was responsible for executive oversight of all naval shipbuilding, conversion, modernisation and disposal of in-service ships programmes. This role included executive oversight of cost, schedule and performance of surface ship and submarine combat systems, electronic warfare systems, shipboard radars and Navy missile defence programmes.
During his distinguished federal career, Stefany received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service, Navy Civilian Meritorious Service Award, two Navy Superior Civilian Service Awards and a Navy Distinguished Civilian Service Award. In 2024, he also received the Wayne E Meyer award for sustained acquisition excellence.
AML3D Non-Executive Director, Frederick J Stefany, commented, “After 43 years of deeply fulfilling service, I was happy to retire from the US Department of the Navy earlier this year. This decision created an opportunity to join the Board of AML3D USA and I am proud to be able to continue to support the great work being done to enhance the US Navy’s capabilities. I am very impressed by AML3D’s ARCEMY advanced Additive Manufacturing technology, which I can see playing a critical role in reinvigorating and accelerating the US Navy’s sovereign manufacturing capabilities, particularly in support of the Maritime Industrial Base.”
Pete Goumas, AML3D’s President will also be appointed to the Board of AML3D US Inc as an Executive Director.
AML3D Managing Director, Sean Ebert, commented, “I’m delighted that Frederick has agreed to join the Board of AML3D USA Inc. Accessing multiple layers of the US Navy’s Marine Industrial Base is central to AML3D’s growth strategy in the US. We are in the early days of supporting the US Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base, surface ships and munitions programmes. I am confident Frederick’s extensive, multi decade experience across many, very relevant, US Department of the Navy programmes, most recently establishing the US Navy’s Marine Industrial Base, will be invaluable in accelerating our growth within the US Defense sector.”
Pete Goumas, President of AML3D US, commented, “Frederick’s career to the highest echelons of the US Department of the Navy is simply awe inspiring. I am excited to learn from him, work with him and be guided by him. AML3D is providing a unique Additive Manufacturing technology that solves for so many of the critical manufacturing needs of the US Navy. I relish the opportunity to leverage Frederick’s deep insights and long-established networks across not only the US Navy’s submarines and ship building programmes but also maintenance, naval aviation and weapons systems. With established plans to expand our US operations, a hugely experienced Board and an exceptional operational team we are well positioned to supercharge AML3D USA’s growth!”
