The BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center recently produced individualised radiator covers for each of the 114 BMW R 1200 GS Rallye bikes taking part in the BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy Central Asia 2018.
A generative design algorithm was used to individualise the designs for the radiator covers, with each rider’s name and start number being added to the part’s existing CAD data. The radiator covers were then manufactured in aluminium using Selective Laser Melting (SLM). Following production, the covers were milled to create a better contrast and surface quality.
The resulting parts are said to be of a very high strength, making them suitable for the rough conditions of the trophy, which took place across 2,350 km of Mongolia from June 3-10, 2018. Following their completion of the race, each rider was awarded their individual radiator cover as a souvenir of their achievement.
