ASTM releases in-process monitoring standards for PBF-LB Additive Manufacturing
ASTM International, Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, USA, has published a new standard, developed by researchers at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Honeywell, NASA and other organisations, which is intended to accelerate the use of Additive Manufacturing in quality-critical industries such as aerospace.
The standard – ASTM E3353-22: Standard Guide for In-Process Monitoring Using Optical and Thermal Methods for Laser Powder Bed Fusion – outlines the strengths and weaknesses of several available monitoring technologies and describes how they might be integrated into Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB) Additive Manufacturing processes.
The guide also establishes common terminology in an effort to establish a streamlined form of communication between customers and vendors of monitor technology.
