Xact Metal, State College, Pennsylvania, USA, has expanded its metal Additive Manufacturing solutions into the dental industry using its recently launched XM200G metal AM machine with the Materialise Pre-Print Dental Module from Materialise, Leuven, Belgium.

“At Xact Metal, we’re taking the essential specs of metal 3D printing and combining them with breakthrough technology to establish a new level of price and performance for the dental industry,” stated Juan Mario Gomez, CEO of Xact Metal. “We have developed a high-performing and complete solution for dental labs using the newly introduced XM200G with specific parameters tailored to the dental industry, a full software workflow in partnership with Materialise Pre-Print Dental Module integrated with Materialise Magics Print for Xact Metal, and certified dental powder from BEGO Medical. The package will make it simple for dental labs to begin printing quickly and for a low cost.”

The XM200G is said to be well-suited for metal dental Additive Manufacturing applications, including crowns, bridges, and removable partial dentures. The AM machine includes a large 150 x 150 mm build area, 100, 200 or 400 W fibre laser options, precise galvanometer mirrors, high-quality F-Theta lens optics and dental-specific parameters at 50 µm laser spot size and 20 µm build layers, or 100 µm laser spot size and 30 µm build layers.

The Materialise Pre-Print Dental Module provides a dental-specific workflow that allows for classification, error repair, build positioning, part labelling, optimised support structures, and part nesting to achieve top build speed and quality. Crowns, bridges, partial dentures, and other dental parts can be easily and quickly prepared for Additive Manufacturing.

Fully integrated into Materialise Magics Print for Xact Metal, the workflow provides intuitive software that facilitates the dental Additive Manufacturing process. The integrated solution includes build preparation tools, the support generation module, and the build processor. Together, these components allow the customer to repair and edit files, prepare the build platform and generate slices.

Xact Metal offers two certified dental powders for Additive Manufacturing from BEGO Medical: Mediloy® S-Co, a type 5 cobalt-based dental alloy for additively manufacturing dental restorations such as crowns and bridges (including metal-ceramic), partial denture frameworks, implant prostheses and other orthodontic applications; and WIRONIUM® RP for removable partial dentures with the non-porous microstructure of the component that reportedly guarantees ideal fatigue strength of the clasps and above-average fit of the partial denture frameworks.
