Remet Metal Labs, a subsidiary of Remet Corporation, headquartered in Utica, New York, USA, has opened a metal Additive Manufacturing laboratory for the production of prototype parts in Stalowa Wola, Poland. The new facility was established jointly with 3D Lab, Warsaw, Poland, and is equipped with 3D Lab’s first ATO Lab metal powder atomising system to be installed globally.

The ATO Lab system was first announced in October 2017. The ‘office-scale’ metal powder atomisation system is designed to satisfy the need for low cost, small-scale equipment for metal powder production in the field of Additive Manufacturing, isostatic pressing and conventional Powder Metallurgy.

Using a novel ultrasonic atomisation technology, the ATO Lab is capable of processing reactive and non-reactive metals such as titanium, magnesium and aluminium alloy to produce free-flowing metal powders with medium grain sizes in the range of 20-100 μm with a narrow grain size distribution. These powders can be produced in small batches of several hundred grams per process.

Remet specialises in the production of solutions used to extract oil and gas from the seabed, with end-users of its products including major mining companies such as BP, Statoil, GE Oil & Gas, and ExxonMobil. Remet Metal Labs is a new branch of the business, in which it is expected that comprehensive projects in the field of new industrial applications and Additive Manufacturing will be implemented.

In addition to the ATO Lab system, the new AM laboratory in Stalowa Wola is equipped with a 3D Systems DMP Flex 350 metal Additive Manufacturing system and Figure 4 photopolymer printer. While creating the concept of the laboratory, 3D Lab stated that the starting point was the ATO Lab metal atomiser. The goal of the Remet Metal Labs laboratory is to create conditions enabling high flexibility in the creation of prototypes in the field of powder production.

3D Lab and Remet will present their solutions jointly at Formnext 2019 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, November 19–22, 2019.
