Phonak launches titanium additively manufactured hearing aid

Phonak, Zurich, Switzerland, has launched its first metal additively manufactured hearing device. The Virto™ B-Titanium is the newest and smallest addition to the company’s Bolero range of solutions for the hearing impaired.

The new aid incorporates a titanium shell produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM). By additively manufacturing the shell, Phonak stated that they were able to produce a casing which is strong, durable, light-weight, and half as thin as on traditional plastic and metal aids.

Because the shell is much thinner than in traditional aids, the size of the new hearing aid is significantly reduced. This could potentially enable invisible in-ear support even for patients whose ear canals are smaller than average, and who may not have been good candidates for in-ear hearing devices prior to the new aid’s development.
