New industry-led centre to help transform Australian manufacturing

A new Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) designed to accelerate Australia’s transition into high value, knowledge-based manufacturing in areas such as Additive Manufacturing, lightweight robotics and medical devices, is to be established in Melbourne, Australia. The new Innovative Manufacturing CRC (IMCRC) brings together a coalition of manufacturing companies and end-users, industry bodies, Australian universities, CSIRO and Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology.

IMCRC Interim Chair, Dr Peter Jonson, stated, “The decision to establish the IMCRC is visionary and provides an exciting opportunity for Australian manufacturing.  We shall be part of a powerful movement to transform the future of Australian manufacturing. Key members of this exciting cooperative venture will hit the ground running to help transform manufacturing in Australia. Ten major industry-research cooperative projects are ready to start just as soon as necessary formalities are finalised.”

Jonson stated that the Commonwealth’s grant of $40 million would be matched by more than $210 million of cash and in-kind contributions from industry, research institutions and state governments that will lift the total budget to over $250 million to seed the process of transformation.
