3D Systems has appointed Dr Vasant Padmanabhan to its board of directors (Courtesy 3D Systems)

3D Systems Corporation, Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA, has appointed Dr Vasant Padmanabhan to its board of directors, effective immediately.

Since 2016, Dr Padmanabhan has served as president, Global Research & Development at Smith & Nephew, plc, Watford, Hertfordshire, UK, a medical technology company operating in the markets for orthopaedic reconstruction, trauma, sports medicine, and advanced wound management. Concurrently, Dr Padmanabhan has also acted as a member of the Trice Medical Board of Directors, a privately-held medical technology company seeking to improve orthopaedic diagnostics for patients and physicians.

Prior to his work with Smith & Nephew, Dr Padmanabhan was senior vice president of technical operations at Thoratec Corporation, a leader in mechanical circulatory support solutions for the treatment of heart failure. In this role, he was responsible for global R&D, Program Management, Operations, and Quality. Earlier in his career, Dr Padmanabhan spent eighteen years at Medtronic, starting as a staff scientist and, progressing through increasingly senior leadership roles, ultimately becoming vice president of product development for Vitatron, the implantable defibrillator arm of the company.

Dr Padmanabhan holds a Doctorate and a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. He completed a Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology in Trichy, India.
